SelfDesign® Learning Community is one of the largest independent online learning schools in British Columbia. We offer a personalized and flexible approach to education for approximately 2,000 learners from kindergarten to grade 12 each year.
What sets us apart from other online learning schools and brick-and-mortar schools is our model and philosophy, which focus on personalized and lifelong learning. We follow the B.C. Ministry of Education curriculum, in a way that puts your child at the centre of their learning journey. We acknowledge that learning is a process, not a product, and that it’s centred on relationships and conversation.
Welcome to this next post in our blog series about enrolment at SelfDesign. Over the last few weeks, we’ve been sharing helpful tips and useful information about enrolling your child in programs and services offered by the SelfDesign Learning Foundation. Check out our most recent post in the enrolment series here.
If you are interested in providing your child with a SelfDesign learning experience, here is a list of the documents you need to have in place to enrol – and re-enrol – your child in SelfDesign Learning Community.
- A scanned (ready to upload) copy or image of your child’s birth certificate.
- Proof of B.C. residency – The child and family must ordinarily live in B.C. and be considered residents of B.C. To enrol or re-enrol your child in SelfDesign, you are required to re-submit residency verification each year as part of the application process. Proof of legal residency shows the name and physical address of the child’s primary parent or guardian, and it must be dated within 90 days of today’s date in this application. The types of documentation that the BC Ministry of Education accepts include any one of the following:
- Utility bill
- Drivers licence
- Credit card invoice
- Rental agreement (all pages)
- Mortgage statement
- Government of British Columbia–issued identification
- Municipal tax bill
- Letter of authorization from a B.C. notary
- Extended travel of up to two years outside of BC may be considered, provided you retain residency, have a good Internet connection, and can maintain your program agreements while you are away.
- BC Medical Card number for each learner
- Proof of citizenship or legal status in Canada – Learners must have official Canadian residency status (citizenship or permanent residency, or the child must be included under their parent’s visa), and at least one parent must be a Canadian citizen, landed immigrant or on a valid Canadian work visa. Documents that the B.C. Ministry of Education accepts are proof of legal status in Canada include any of the following documents that are still current (not expired):
- Permanent resident form/card
- Immigration Canada permit
- Immigration Canada Visa
- Canada Immigration Record of Landing Form
- Authorization to transfer your child’s school records from a previous school – If your child has been enrolled in school elsewhere, you will need to provide the name of the previous school and authorize a transfer of records.
- In addition, where applicable, the following documentation may be required:
- Proof of custody
- Legal name changes
- Indigenous Ancestry
- Proof of Custody or Restraining Order
