In an environment geared towards personalized learning, children take the lead to create their own unique blueprint for learning. Their learning path is built around their unique interests, curiosities and passions—allowing them to stay engaged and excited about discovery. Learning becomes a natural and enjoyable process when a subject resonates on a personal level.

Curiosity is at the heart of how children learn best. By supporting their interests rather than following a one-size-fits-all model, the child’s natural learning ability gets a major boost.

Through personalized learning, children don’t just absorb information—they become active participants in writing the script for their own lives, beginning at an early age. This sets the stage for a future where they can thrive.

At SelfDesign® Learning Community, personalized learning is at the centre of our philosophy. Our learners are encouraged to take responsibility for their learning and in turn, their whole lives. With the expert guidance of BC-certified educators, learners follow their individualized learning plan while learning self-agency and responsibility.

  1. Personalized learning allows children to go at their own pace

Every child has different needs and abilities and progresses at different speeds. Personalized learning honours this and lets the child choose the pace of their lessons and activities. Educators and parents/guardians are in communication, observing the learner’s tendencies and ongoing progress. This way, every learner is given an equal opportunity to succeed.

      2. Personalized learning gives learners freedom to forge their own path

Here at SelfDesign, we’ve seen firsthand how children show persistence and dedication when given the freedom to choose and work on their own projects. Personalized learning encourages children to take the initiative. One SelfDesign learner credits finishing writing her book to having the freedom to work on the book as part of a high-school-level SelfDesign creative writing course.

     3. Personalized learning helps develop communication and relationship skills

One of the most important aspects of personalized learning, aside from the parent/guardian-child relationship, is the learner-educator relationship. This model of learning creates a deep connection between learners, their families and educators. Instead of telling learners and families what to do, educators support the process by offering guidance and suggestions. This way, the child is given space and authority to guide their learning, led by their innate curiosity and wonder.

Learners who have more control over their learning paths gain a deeper understanding of their strengths and challenges. This self-awareness improves their ability to effectively communicate their needs and emotions in all areas of their lives.

    4. Personalized learning fosters joy, enthusiasm and wonder

When children are free to self-author their learning path, a sense of passion and wonder takes over. They become more engaged and enthusiastic once they realize they can learn all about subjects and areas they are naturally drawn to.

One SelfDesign learner named Matt acknowledges SelfDesign as a place where he learned how to dream and wonder, in turn preserving his natural creativity and curiosity. Matt stated that the personalized learning approach kept him engaged and eager while making learning fun and exciting.

    5. Children get a head start on forging their life path

Personalized learning encourages learners to figure out what they are most passionate about, so they can start to gain skills in those areas early on in life. They get a head start on learning about things they have a natural interest in. They can then continue to pursue these passions and interests throughout their lives.

One SelfDesign learner got a head start on his graphic design career by teaming up with an educator to code his portfolio website, and was able to consult with a brand strategist to make improvements. All of these professional developments happened before he even commenced!
