Celebrated 40 years of SelfDesign

Forty years ago, our founder, Brent Cameron, incorporated SelfDesign Learning Foundation as a charity in British Columbia. He believed that learning is unlimited, ageless and continuous and that it should be a personalized experience for children. In 2024, we celebrated this important milestone in a multitude of ways:

    • A commemorative book called Stories of SelfDesign: 40 Years of Lifelong Learning
    • Two videos: “What I love about SelfDesign” and “40 Years in the Making”
    • A t-shirt contest by learners with t-shirts and hoodies being sent to all contractors
    • 40th-anniversary promotional items
    • Monthly internal and external giveaways
    • A LocalLabs 40th anniversary celebration

By the numbers

SelfDesign’s programs continue to thrive. In 2024, 1,939 learners were enrolled in SelfDesign Learning Community, with an additional 330 registered in SelfDesign Home Learning. Our commitment to inclusive education was reflected in the 902 learners supported with disabilities or diverse abilities. Meanwhile, the HomeLearners Network delivered 1,368 engaging learning activities, helping families and learners explore their passions and STEAM education opportunities in a flexible and supportive environment.

SelfDesign Learning Community highlights

2024 was a year of growth for SelfDesign Learning Community. We successfully completed two inspections by the BC Ministry of Education and Child Care, earning commendations for our continuous improvement efforts, our robust criminal record check tracking processes, and the effectiveness of our new administrative structure in better-serving learners, families and educators.

Additionally, we received re-accreditation from Cognia, an esteemed international accrediting body, reaffirming our commitment to excellence in online learning. SelfDesign scored above average on all performance standards, reflecting our dedication to providing high-quality, personalized learning experiences. The Cognia review also highlighted areas for growth, encouraging us to expand our data collection and deepen engagement with families to enhance learner support further.

Looking ahead

As we reflect on 2024, we recognize the strength of our learning community—built on deep connections, shared values and a commitment to evolving. As Board Chair Verena Gibbs expressed, “We recognize that growth often comes with challenges, but we embrace these moments as opportunities for transformation.” With gratitude for the past and excitement for the future, we step into 2025 ready to continue learning, growing and thriving—together.
