With so many grade 12 learners finishing their SelfDesign journey this spring and moving on to their next great learning adventures, four learners have come together to spearhead development of SelfDesign’s first-ever official Commencement Scrapbook. This digital publication draws on the tradition of the highschool yearbook to provide each commencing learner with a collection of memories created by and for their peers.
Erik, a learner on the SelfDesign Digital Commencement Scrapbook committee, says the committee has been committed to giving the Class of 2021 something to remember their last year with SelfDesign by.
“By looking back at the past the future becomes that much more special,” he says.
The committee’s members – Meghan, Deborah, Raia and Erik, all learners finishing grade 12 with SelfDesign – worked with SelfDesign’s Communications team and Educational Program team to develop the concept and gather information. The work, Erik says, included planning and sharing ideas and providing insight into the design.
“Every student has a voice,” Erik says, “and expressing all of those voices is what made our small team come together to complete something that turned out really well.”
The scrapbook includes photos of learners, and information that each learner submitted about themselves – where they live, what grade 10–12 themes, workshops, camps and add-on courses they took part in, and their observations and favourite quotes. It also includes photos of SelfDesign’s grade 10–12 learning consultants and learning specialists, with their best wishes and congratulations to commencing learners.
Every learner has so many reasons to be proud of their accomplishments during their time with SelfDesign. The Commencement Scrapbook will help them remember those accomplishments, the educators who mentored them, and the friends they met and made.
For future commencing classes of SelfDesign, Erik shares the following advice:
“Remember that everyone around you is feeling a similar way, and all of your families and supporters want to celebrate your achievements – so make sure when you graduate, you do it explosively and make the end of your schooling something to remember.”
